I can’t seem to stop myself from fidgeting and I hope I have myself more under control by the time she gets here. We’re meeting at a Starbucks on the opposite end of town because it is in close proximity to the rental agency where I don’t actually work. I’ve worn the only real business clothes I have, a navy suit and blazer.

I glance down at my watch and see that she is now fifteen minutes late. I take another quick look around the coffee shop but see no one who is waiting on their own. Just as I’m starting to wonder if I’ve come to the wrong shop, a tall blonde woman walks in. Immediately I know that it’s her, even though I’ve never set eyes on her before. She is dressed exceptionally well and everywhere I look she is covered in expensive looking jewelry. When she finally turns my way our eyes meet and she smiles.
“Sarah?” She asks while walking briskly towards me.
“Anne?” I stand to greet her and when she reaches me she ignores my outstretched hand and leans in for a hug. “Oh, it’s so nice to meet you. I hope I’m not late?”
“No, not at all. I ended up getting out of an appointment a little early so I just came ahead.” I lie.
“Oh, good. I hope I haven’t kept you waiting long.” She sits down in the chair across from me and I sit down as well, trying to be as graceful as I can manage in high heels. “I’m so glad that Joseph ran into you the other day, I have been telling him for years that we need to rent that place out. We only go up a handful of times each year and it’s so wasteful. It’s a lovely property, have you seen it yet?”
“No, I haven’t. Joe showed me pictures though.” I lie again.
“You have to visit to get a real idea of the place. You should go up some time, it’s a bit of a drive but I’m sure you could spend the night. I don’t think Joe would mind.”
“That sounds lovely but there might be no need for that. I do need pictures for the rental listing though, Joe only had a few. Do you have more pictures that I could use? Perhaps some that were professionally taken?”
“Well, I’m not a professional by any means but I did take about a few hundred pictures with an expensive Nikon camera a few years back. I know I still have them somewhere, if I got those to you do you think they would work?” She asks.
“Yes, that should work just fine.” I say, hoping that the pictures she’s taken are half way to decent. ” We only need about twenty pictures so I’m sure I’ll be able to find something suitable.”
“Oh good, I’m so glad. What other information do you need from us?”
“Joseph has given me all of the details about the property itself but if you’d like to tell me some more information about the area, that would be lovely. Are there any tourist spots, is there golfing nearby? I need to know the names of the local hotspots and the rest I will research.”
“Okay, that’s not a problem, I will get that information to you shortly. Leave me your email address and I will send the photos as well.”
I nearly gasp at the thought of her sending that many pictures through email. “A few hundred high quality pictures will take forever to send. How about we meet at some point and you can give me the disc?”
“Thank you! That would be great. I will send you an email once I get home tonight with the information you have requested and we will arrange to meet in the near future so that I may give you the pictures. Now, I was wondering if you could send me the wording of the rental listing before you place it online? I would like to check it all over and make sure it reads the way I’d like it to.” She smiles sweetly at me.
“Absolutely, that is not a problem.” I smile back at her but secretly I’m hoping that she won’t meddle too much.
“I would also like for you to book these weeks off for next summer. I’m not entirely sure that we will be able to go up for all of these weeks but I want them booked off all the same.” She hands me a few sheets of printed paper.
“Okay, perfect.” I look down at the list expecting to see that she’s requested a few weeks or weekends off for the summer but to my horror there are at least six full weeks of the summer booked off and another there weeks booked off in the fall. “Oh, these are quite a lot of weeks to book off for the summer. The summer is the time of year where you can really make the most money on the rental fees.”
“Well, it’s also the time of year where we enjoy going to the cottage the most.” She smiles again but there is little sweetness in it this time.
“Understood.” I smile at her and look down at the papers, wishing I had thought to bring a file folder or a briefcase. Somewhere to put these damn things. “I am here to serve. I must get going, I have another appointment across town but I’m glad we were able to meet.” I rise, swinging my purse onto my shoulder and smoothing down my skirt before offering her my hand. She stands and takes it this time, not forcing me to endure her bear hug like last time.
“Thank you again for arranging to meet with me. I know you must have a very busy schedule.” She tucks her chair back into the table and turns to walk out the door. Before she starts walking away from me she seems to remember something and she angles her body towards me again.”Oh, and darling, I forget to mention but for the vacation home I’d like everything to go through me, not Joe. He doesn’t really have a head for this stuff so it’s best not to bother him with it.” She nods at me and turns herself back towards the door, her high heels clicking rhythmically as she saunters away from me.
I collapse back into the chair and sit to think for a moment. Perhaps there isn’t such a thing as easy money after all.
